One of the goals of WordPress is to give a voice to everyone, no matter the age. That’s why we’re happy to announce that as a part of WordCamp Nordic Contributor day in 2019, we’ll host a free WordPress workshop for kids.
During the workshop, kids will have the opportunity to create their own website using WordPress. In three hours with the help of volunteers, they’ll have a chance to set up a website, choose a theme, and learn how to create different content types.
About the workshop:
- Instructor: Petya Raykovska, Senior Project Manager at Human Made
- Suitable age: 8 – 14 years.
- Language: English. Volunteers helping the kids will also be fluent in Finnish and Swedish.
- Duration: 2 hours of working, about an hour of breaks, games, show & tell
- Capacity: 20 kids
- Equipment:
- Each kid will need to bring their own laptop. This is important as we’ll not be able to provide equipment for everyone.
- A pen and a notebook (something to write on)
- Before the workshop:
- To create a website each kid will need an email address they can access on the day. It can be their own or a parent’s email address. We can create a temporary email address for those that don’t have one for the duration of the workshop, but we’d like to transfer it to a parent afterward.
What are the kids going to learn?
- How to set up their own WordPress website
- How to choose a design (theme) for their website
- How to create different content types – text, image galleries, video
- How to add different visual and functional elements to their website.
About the instructor
Petya has been working with WordPress for more than 10 years and has experience in both managing and creating websites, and working with different types of first-time users. She started leading workshops for children around the world in 2016 and has helped organize the event in Thailand, Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, the UK, Croatia, Zimbabwe, and more.

Frequently asked questions
- Can parents attend the workshop?
We’ll be happy to have you during the workshop if you’d like to stay with your child. If you know WordPress, you can also volunteer to help out during the workshop. Let us know in the sign up form.
- Do I need to bring my own laptop?
Yes. It’s important that each child has a computer to work on. We won’t be able to provide computers for everyone so we’re asking each parent to make sure their child has something to work on. If you’re unable to bring your own laptop, please let us know when signing up for the workshop so we can reserve one in advance for the duration of the event.
- Will food and drinks be provided?
Yes. There will be plenty of water and snacks provided for the breaks during the workshop
- How much does it cost?
The workshop is free but you will need to sign your child up by getting a ticket from our website.
- What language will the workshop be in?
The instructor will lead the workshop in English, but each child will have a volunteer speaking Finnish to help them if there’s something they don’t understand. We’ll have some volunteers who speak Swedish as well.
- All the tickets are gone, can I still sign up?
If the workshop appears sold out, please contact us using the contact form of the website. We’ll create a waitlist for everyone who didn’t sign up on time and will contact you if any of the signed up kids drop out.
- I signed up but my child is not going to be able to attend. What should I do?
If you’ll not be able to attend, kindly let us know using the contact form on the website so we can provide your ticket to another child.
